Chaos at BOE Meeting after "B" Word Used in Heated Debate
Chaos ensued midway through today's Montgomery County Board of Education meeting when newly installed member Rita Montoya broke established rules of decorum and used the "B" word -- three times -- during heated policy discussions.
"The first time she said it there was stunned silence, then everyone sort of acted like it didn't happen," said new board member Laura Stewart.
The second time, Board President Julie Yang banged her gavel and demanded order. "No one profanes these hallowed halls. The Chair has the right to censure," she warned.
Montoya says she was tired of "tiptoeing around the elephant" when she let loose for a third time, during a contentious discussion of proposed changes to MCPS harassment policies.
"Beidleman! Beidleman! Beidleman!" she blurted out.
Chairs were shoved back, sheets of papers danced through the air, and Yang gaveled the meeting into recess while involuntarily mouthing the words to Diddy's Bump, Bump, Bump.
The carnival atmosphere finally settled down after new board member Natalie Zimmerman risked censure and quietly said it three more times. "None of the others would do it and there was a lot more business to cover," Zimmerman told The Montgonion.
Montoya says she doesn't regret her words but will be careful to only say it twice in future meetings. "The county lawyers told us at orientation, don't say it, because it unearths past demons. I really don't care."
