‘Huge win’: Capitol Technology University Protesters Reach Agreement to Dismantle Encampment
Student protesters at Capitol Technology University in Laurel, Maryland agreed to dismantle their encampment in exchange for concessions from administration and town officials.
Students earned the right to present their case for divestment from RadioShack at the next meeting of the University’s Board of Regents, and the Laurel Town Council agreed to delay installation of American flags on Main Street posts while student workers install receivers for drone-based GPS transponders. Normally the flags go up from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
One student protester, addressing about 80 students who gathered for a rally to announce the agreement, called it a “huge win" but said protestors won't rest until 90 percent of the university's endowment is converted to GameStop shares and fast-food drone delivery becomes available throughout the Laurel tri-county area.
“Capitol Technology’s endowment should not be used as a life support system for people needing 3.5-inch floppy disks and male-to-male VGA cords; nor should it tolerate carbon-based pizza delivery," the rally speaker added.
“They’re just really scared about commencement,” one student was overheard saying of the agreement. According to the agreement, the encampment must be cleared by 5 p.m. tomorrow, leaving the green open for June 2nd graduation preparations.
Capitol Technology students failed to win an additional concession from the administration, that charges be dropped against the 41 students arrested for staging robot car death matches on Route 1 last fall.
Laurel officials say the tech upgrades on Main Street will be complete next week and the American flags will be hung immediately afterwards.
