Mr Lee from Peter's Grill Joins WWE SmackDown!
On a recent Tuesday morning the takeout crowd hovered three rows deep at the counter of Peter's Grill on Gude Drive in Rockville. Behind the register, owner Mr Lee juggled styrofoam clamshells, a cordless phone tucked under his chin, and shouted out the orders.
Breakfast platter, over EZZEE, haaaaamm!!
Bacon, egg and SWISSS cheese, croissan't Nooooo!! toasted.
Steak and cheese combo-o-oh, extra HOTZZ!
It was both Mr Lee's booming, sing-song voice and his easy command of the room that attracted the attention of WWE talent scouts passing through Rockville last month, leading to a whirlwind series of auditions with WWE executives.
Now Mr Lee takes over as Ring Announcer for Friday night's WWE SmackDown!, starting in June.
"Never mind if ya smelled what The Rock was cooking, Mr Lee is in the kitchen now," World Wrestling Entertainment President Nicholas Khan announced at a star-studded Las Vegas press conference.
WWE fan favorites welcomed Lee into the wrestling family. “If wishes were fishes, Mr Lee would fry them to perfection," veteran announcer Jim Ross told reporters.
"Say goodbye to Mr Lee, Rockville. And get ready for stomach rumblllllll!" quipped Michael Buffer, who lost the Friday night WWE SmackDown gig to Mr Lee. "I'm disappointed but at least my catchphrase is safe," Buffer added.
WWE officials are pressuring Mr Lee to quit Peter's Grill and relocate to the west coast, but he says he won't leave Rockville. "And that's the bottom line because he said so," wrestler Steve Austin told The Montgonion.
