Lake Effect Snow to Bury Quince Orchard Area
Heavy lake effect bands could dump several tenths of an inch of snow in parts of central Montgomery County and across the Kentlands and Quince Orchard today and tomorrow, according to the Capitol Weather Group.
In western Montgomery, including Darnestown, most communities will barely see a flake or two, according to this morning’s forecast.
But for areas near Quince Orchard, and in the communities around Kentlands Green, the winds and colder temperatures could whip up snow from Inspiration Lake and Lake Nirvana and deposit so much that travel could become dangerous and impossible, the weather forecasters say.
In affected areas, the snow is expected to start today and get heavier over the next 12-24 hours. As of 5 a.m. today, the snow fall projected for specific communities included wide ranges:
• Quince Orchard could get 0.29 to 0.77 inches
• Downtown Crown could get 0.09 to 0.17 inches
• Dufief could get 0.08 to 0.36 inches
• Lakelands could get 0.11 to 0.21 inches
• And Kentlands could get 0.49 to 1.08 – more than 1 inch of snow in a 48-hour period!
So what does that mean for Cougars Stadium, where Quince Orchard High School is scheduled to square off against Wise in the Maryland Class 4A Championship game next week?
Today, 0.01 to 0.03 inches is forecast to fall on Quince Orchard High School, according to the weather service. Tomorrow, another 0.08 to 0.12 inches; then, tomorrow night, another 0.10 to 0.26 inches is possible.
That’s a total of 0.19 to 0.41 inches.
“We can’t control the weather,” Cougars Coach John Kelley said.
But he also noted that in past Montgomery County snow storms, even when there was a two-hour delayed opening, the stadium has been cleared by afternoon practice time.
The team put up a Google docs sign-up link for Booster Club parents interested in helping sweep snow at the stadium this week.
