New Burtonsville School Building Sparks Mascot Decision

New Burtonsville School Building Sparks Mascot Decision

As construction continues on a brand-new Montgomery County school in Burtonsville, the community is being asked to help make one of the most exciting decisions ahead of the school’s 2026 reopening: choosing the mascot that will represent the school population for years to come.

The Board of Education selected four finalists from more than 3,000 submissions and has opened a public poll to choose the winner. “It was particularly nice to see so many people from outside the immediate Burtonsville area making similar suggestions,” said Board President Grace Rivera-Oven. “Residents from Rockville, Bethesda, Takoma and Silver Spring made strong impressions.”

These are the finalists for the new school mascot:

  • Patriots (1,236 submissions)

  • Cougars (735 submissions)

  • Panthers (688 submission)

  • Frogs (432 submissions)

  • All Others (13)

The new building in Burtonsville is expected to open for the start of the 2026-2027 school year. A decision regarding its mascot and student population is expected by mid-August. You can vote for your choice here.
