Divine Honored with New US Postal Service Stamps

Marylanders will soon be able to send their mail and honor an iconic local star of the big screen and stage at the same time.

The U.S. Postal Service announced Monday it will release two stamps next year commemorating beloved actor Harris Glenn Mills, better known by stage name Divine. The stamps show the late star as Edna Turnblad in the 1988 version of the box office hit Hairspray and as Francine Fishpaw in the cult classic Polyester.

The postal service said the stamps, which will be sold on panes of 20, exude Divine's “intense femininity and sense of vulnerability” and are the first scratch-and-sniff stamps ever produced. One is scented with Ultra Clutch Hairspray and the other with model building glue.

USPS said the new stamps demonstrate “our commitment to providing a diverse range of subjects and designs for both Maryland philatelists and fellatioists.”

Mills was born in Baltimore, where he lived most of his life and filmed most of his movies with artist and producer John Waters. He died in 1988 at age 42, three weeks after Hairspray was released nationwide.
