Montgomery County is home to a vibrant collection of cities, towns, and communities, each with its own unique identity. Many proudly fly their own official flags, serving as powerful symbols of their heritage, values, and community spirit. Now, it's time for the public to weigh in and decide: Which Montgomery County flag truly stands out as the best?

The Contenders: A Field of Distinctive Banners

We identified 17 communities with official flags. From classic designs to more modern interpretations, they offer a fascinating glimpse into local pride, values and history. Here are the contenders:

Chevy Chase

The flag is a white field with the town seal in the center, a horizontally stretched green ring with a white field. In the field is a scene depicting a row of five homes with three trees behind them.

Chevy Chase Village

The flag features the village coat of arms on a blue background. The upper portion depicts the top part of the Great Seal of Maryland. The state flower, Black-eyed Susan, is shown in the border below Chevy and Chase. The lower portion represents the coat of arms of the Montgomery family. The three leaf clover in the center border portrays hope, joy and victory. The crown at the top represents the board of seven managers governing the village.

Clarksburg

With borders representing the Maryland state flag, a crest in the center includes a tree representing community and growth and a silhouette of Dowden’s Ordinary, one of the most historical sites in Clarksburg. Mixed traditional and contemporary elements embody past, present, and future.

Clarksburg Village

The flag is a dark green field with a brown vertical bar encased in two golden bars. In the center is the village logo. The logo has a golden horizontally stretched ring with a thin outer ring of the same color, with a wheat garb, wheel barrow, flower pot, and old jug in the center.

Friendship Heights Village

The flag has a blue background with horizontal yellow stripes at top and bottom. In the center is a depiction of the Friendship Heights Village Community Center built in 1986.

Gaithersburg

The flag has a white field and a forest green "G" in the middle, with a tree in the center of the "G" and the motto "Character Counts!" underneath, which the slogan of an organization by the same name focused on building students’ character skills and shaping a positive school culture

Garrett Park

The flag is a white field with a single vertical green bar on the hoist side. The center is an emblem which features the old Garrett Park town hall. To the bottom fly side of the flag is the town mascot--a porcupine holding a rake. 

Glen Echo

Officially adopted in 2016 but in use much longer, the flag was designed to meet the five rules of a good flag, while also symbolizing Glen Echo' green spaces with a sycamore leaf, the town's official tree.

Kensington

The flag has a white background, town logo and 10 yellow rays starting from the logo towards the edges of the flag. The logo is elliptical with a green four-ways tree branch on yellow in the center.

Kentlands

The flag is a blue field with a bottom white stripe in the shape of a fence. In the main field there are 7 unequal rows of 11 black birds. The 9th bird in the 2nd row is a plane. Overlying the birds is a crest with the top of the crest being inscribed with the neighborhood's name and establishment date. A smaller crest displays a white and black heraldic horse on a white shield with black vertical lines. At the bottom of the crest is a white banner inscribed with Gaithersburg, the neighborhood's parent municipality.

Laytonsville

With bold red stripes top and bottom, the flag depicts an outline map of Montgomery County. In the center is a Victorian style farmhouse typical of the town's historic architecture and representing its agricultural roots.

Montgomery Village

The flag has three vertical stripes of blue-white-green. In the middle of the white field is the logo of Montgomery Village, derived from an ancient symbol of friendship and representing two people clasping hands in peace and harmony. 

Poolesville

With a green background and gold lettering, the flag uses a historic image of the town hall, which also appears on the town's welcome sign.

Rockville

Based on its coat of arms, the design on the Rockville shield is the same as on the flag. The flag has a white background with wavy blue diagonal bars alternated with red cross bottony.

Somerset

The first home in Somerset home was occupied in 1893 and the aristocratic community was known for tranquility and refinement. The flag, featuring a Victorian style home and trees, reflects the heritage.

Takoma Park

The center is an oak leaf and the blue band around the center diamond represents clean air and water. The four green corners reinforce the idea of an incorporated community. The gold behind the leaf implies warmth for the community's friendliness.

Washington Grove

The flag is mostly a green field with a part of the upper fly side being brown. Overlaying the field is a golden oak leaf with an acorn on it. Washington Grove is referred to as "the town within a forest," and the flag represents the forest.
