MCDOT Plans Flex Tolls for Burtonsville Access Road
The new Burtonsville Access Road will use a dynamic tolling system that adjusts rates based on traffic volumes, according to an announcement from the Montgomery County Department of Transportation. The goal is to guarantee commuters a reliable trip where they can travel at least 15 miles per hour.
The Burtonsville Access Road begins at the Burtonsville Elementary Access Road and connects to the existing roadway and entrance of Old Columbia Pike (MD 198). Overhead toll transponders will be located at each end.
Tolls are expected to peak around 9:00 a.m. on weekdays, 20 minutes before the first bell, with peak rates around $40, according to MCDOT. Tolls will top out at $10-15 through the noon hour, peak again before dismissal at 3:50 p.m., and stay below $10 for most of the evening.
Parents without an E-Z Pass can utilize the “Kiss and Go” lot adjacent to Jeffrey’s Subs & Pizza
"If it gets me home in time for the start of Today With Jenna & Friends, it's worth every penny," said Burtonsville PTA member Marie Noe, whose sentiment was shared by many.
According to MCDOT Transportation Secretary Patrick Danica, “As long as people are willing to pay, that is what will drive the tolling."
Beginning next school year, Burtonsville Elementary parents must have an E-Z Pass transponder to drop off and pick up their children. Those without E-Z Pass may use the ‘Kiss and Go’ lot adjacent to Jeffrey's Subs & Pizza, or home school.
