Public to Vote on Glenmont Mural Design
Montgomery County is calling on the public to help select a new mural for the park activity building at Glenmont Local Park. The public display will transform the drab south façade into a brilliant work of art.
"The work of our four finalists reflects the character, culture, and creativity of the Glenmont community," said program manager Mikal Hellard. Here they are:
Glenmont Gator Glade
Artist John Ritchie's vibrant depiction of feral alligators at Brookside Gardens celebrates Glenmont's rich invasive diversity and love for their reptilian neighbors.
Glenmont Grime & Glory
With a vivid tableau of overflowing dumpsters rendered in sticky pastels, North Bethesda's Artist in Residency, Nathaniel Manny Gonsalèz, explores the color palate of waste in suburban decay.
Glenmont Gloam Under the Glow
Set beneath the iconic Glenmont Shopping Center arcade sign, artist Nalo Xone's stirring piece brings light to the area's shadow population in ghostly turquoise and bruised blues.
Towering Transformation
The Glenmont water tower rises like a beacon over a tidy shopping center featuring boutique facades, with a nostalgic nod to Tuffy Leemans Duckpin bowling alley, in Leisure World resident Beatrice Kronicm's first-ever mural entry.
The winning artist will receive $30,000 for the final design, creation, and installation of the mural. "Glenmont residents begged the county to use their tax dollars to beautify the community. And this takes care of it," mural manager Hellard said.
