VIDA Fitness Installs Urinal Cake Case Cams

VIDA Fitness, the hip, in-crowd gym chain where D.C.’s gay community works out, has announced the installation of surveillance cameras in urinal cake cases in men’s locker rooms to help combat theft.

Eric Whittacker, the general manager of VIDA Fitness’s Brentwood gym, announced the plans to install the cameras today.

“Some of you have noticed the presence of new cameras in the urinal cake cases of the men’s locker room,” Whittacker wrote. “It is our plan to increase visibility in those areas due to the rash of urinal cake theft plaguing our gyms.

“We have an ongoing and serious urinal cake theft problem in the men’s locker room, and we have found that putting cameras in….is the best way to deter theft,” Whittacker said. He added that the cameras would also act as a side glance deterrent and, "prevent those who might shake too long or too vigorously from loitering."

VIDA will have signs alerting people to the presence of urinal cake case cameras once the installation is finished.

Whittacker said members can pee at the Popeyes across the street if they are uncomfortable with the new theft deterrents. Popeyes will make $500 to $3,000 per day from the arrangement; however, it is not a real gym toilet and there is no urinal cake case.
