Laurel Promotes Meme Coins and Pro Crypto Agenda
The City of Laurel has launched new cryptocurrency tokens that are soaring in value – and potentially boosting its worth – just when officials were debating how to overcome a huge budget deficit. It’s the latest norm-defying promotion by the city, which has also helped sell branded Laurel Park Racebooks, gold Speedy Car Wash Tokens, and diamond-encrusted Dinosaur Park fossils.
“It’s time to celebrate everything we stand for: GRIFTING! Join our very special Laurel Community,” the city said in a social post late Tuesday promoting the new tokens. They are marketed with a picture of Laurel President Pro-Tempore Jeffrey Mills under the words “Out of One Truck, Many Pallets,” a reference to Mills' commercial truck driving training institute.
In promoting the meme coins, the City of Laurel told residents to “Buy More than You Can Afford, Like Cannabis!” The website selling the tokens says they are meant as expressions of support and not an investment opportunity.
That hasn’t stopped people from trying to make money. The Mills meme coins started selling for $10 each before soaring to as high as about $70 as of Wednesday morning. It fell sharply later Wednesday after The Laurel Board of Trade posted about a meme coin for its organization. The Mondy coin was trading for around $18 Thursday afternoon.
